Why you should secure your email address Part 2

We continue sharing smart suggestions from our spamsters regarding email security:

  • be smart with password – previous case leads us to the next one. Upper and lower case, numbers, signs, digits – be creative as much as possible (with 8 characters at least 😉 )
  • change your password regularly and keep different – it is a second part of the previous suggestion. P.S. Keep different does not mean to change password from PasS8Wor#d1 to  PasS8Wor#d2. Remember, be creative!
  • create a testing email address using free email providers  – probably not the best decision in terms to those email providers but it is legal anyway. Using testing email address allows you to check the services that look suspicious to you. You can always change the email address to the other one once you are confident that it is secured to use.
  • two factor authentication – if your email provider supports it – use it! This also applies to third party services using your email address. In this case you can create an app specific password.
  • avoid replying to unknown – let it stay in your blocked list. This is the best one, where you add your email address to the Spamdrain filtering and we do the rest 😎

Thank you for reading!

Have a great day and a secured mailbox!

Why you should secure your email address Part 1

Email security is now one of the most readable and discussed topic on the Internet. Since online security evolves, the same thing happens with attempts to hack email accounts. We’ve gathered some most helpful things to do with your email account we found effective and easy to do:
  • use ssl – this means it is better to use secure transfer instead of non-SSL. For instance for IMAP connection type 993 protocol is more secure than 143. You can change the settings at Spamdrain but before ask your email provider if they support SSL connection (we think they should!).
  • hackers want your personal data – than don’t give it! Easy to use rule is to not reply to strange email message providing your personal data. If you think your bank provider or internet provider is asking you to send some data they never asked before – it’s a sign to double check. For instance, account@googl.com or similar sender could be not so honest and legitimate than actual account@google.com
  • phishing – taking your login/bank details. These are the email messages trying to find your credit card details or any other online money access. Example of such message could be email message from your favorite online store from no-reply@mazoncanada.ca (where “a” is definitely missing), with a general “Dear Client” greeting instead of “Dear Julia” asking you to confirm your identity by clicking on the link. By the way, link could look fine itself, but when you hover over the link it leads to some other content.
  • entering your personal data. Let’s imagine an email message asking you to confirm your age and hey! – there is already a field built-in in the message to enter you birth data. What a smart solution you would think (in this case think without double checking) – you enter the data and click on submit. A few minutes later social media account is hacked? Hmm, definitely birth date is not the best password and entering it into the spam message is not the best action.

Stay tuned and be the first one to read part two next week!

2018 Filtering Statistics

2018 year is already over and here are some fresh stats of the past year.

Last year our hard working spamsters filtered 350M messages, which is approximately on million messages per day. 162M messages were classified as valid, the ones we sent to your Inboxes and 188M messages we are blocked as spam, unwanted newsletters and virus/phishing mails. Yep, as you can see, the amount of spam (54%) is bigger than valid messages amount (46%) again.

If we look at the monthly chart we can see that the end of the year, especially November and October brought our spamsters the most working months: 20% of all filtered messages were checked during these months. On the other hand, June and July brought us 14 % of filtered messages. Hmm, spammers do like warm water and sandy beaches during summer?

We have also check the reported messages. Theses are the messages you think slipped through and we thought they are valid for you. The amount of these messages is 0.0051% of all filtered messages. The number is lowered a bit from last year’s 0.0054% which we think is pretty good. Now we have a goal for this year 🙂

We hope our service helped you last year and saved you some time in 2018.

We also believe 2019 will be less spammy or more safe in your Inbox 😉

Thanks for reading and stay tuned!

Christmas is Coming!

Christmas spirit is already in the air with all the presents buying, planning time with your family and friends and trying to finish all important deals by the New Year. In other words, Christmas Rush is coming or has already come 😉

What is Christmas Rush for you? Do you spend all your free time doing Christmas shopping or burn the midnight oil in the office trying to finish an important project before the New Year comes? Do you own a business and are preparing to deal with the rush of shoppers that will flood the stores or you are the one, who already have ordered all the presents online and waiting for their successful delivery?
You might have different associations with Christmas Rush, but we know one thing about you for sure – you have an email address that might suffer from spam during this festive season.
As research has shown Christmas time is also a “cyber crime time” as people tend to buy more and more things online, become busier and less attentive.
Cyber criminals’ shopping list includes such things as bogus shipping delivery status notifications, unsolicited emails offerings special deals, and fake receipts for online buying which seduce you to open attachments containing ransomware and so on and so forth.
A good tip is to stay alerted and double check before clicking to open some suspicious email and get yourself a little helper for your mail box. Our Spamster will sort out your emails so that you do not spend a priceless time on reading spam messages and maybe even save some money not clicking on a malicious link.

We do celebrate Christmas and New Year but we also work hard during those days and our spamsters are ready to help you anytime!

Recent Stats and More

Summer equator is over and we would like to share some statistics with you. The first month of summer showed us that spammers do take vacations. With 14M filtered spam messages June is the least spammed month of this year so far. On the other hand January is on top of the list having 17M spam messages filtered.
If we have a closer look at the whole picture of filtered messages, we can see that half of the messages is spam. Coming back to our leading months, January goes with 30M filtered messages and June goes with 25.4M messages filtered. Yes, you are right the spam part is even bigger than 50%.
We also wanted to share some good news like decreasing of spam messages but looks like it is not the case this year. The average amount of spam being filtered is 16M spam messages per month. Using simple math you can see that our users receive 500K spam emails per day and 6 spam messages per second.
Everything mentioned above proves one more time that using spam filter saves your time and makes your life just a bit easier. Stay tuned and have a sunny summer with clean Inbox.
