Another spam filtering year is over. 2017 did bring us lots of spam waves and phishing messages. However, if we look back into 2016 and compare results of the same users, we can see that the number of spam messages overall is descending.
Natural disasters, cryptocurrencies and iPhone winnings were the most popular new spam messages along with old school fraud and lottery winning ones. Looking back into statistics of 2017 spam filtering we can see that there were 446.91 M messages filtered during last year and only 162.23 M (36%) of them were classified as valid messages.
Yes, that’s correct 283,42 M messages were blocked by our Spamsters which is 64% of the total number. A big amount of spam, you might think, but the good news is that garbage stays in your blocked list.
According to our statistics, most spam messages are being caught by our Spamsters during working hours. As we can see from charts, weekends are mostly free from spam (maybe spammers take care of themselves and have rest on Saturdays – Sundays).
If we take a look on monthly charts, we can see March being “the most spamming month”. Spammers wake up from hibernation? Hmmm, interesting. Luckily, our Spamsters do not sleep and always stay on guard 🙂
We may write couple more pages about spam, its types and provide more and more statistics, but lets not dig that deep. If you wish to count and share how many messages your personal Spamster filtered last year, we will be happy to see your comments 🙂

Your Email Address Name Matters
In this article we have chosen to share with you some tips on how to name your email address. “Can there be any tips at all?” you might ask. We hope that you will find the answer in our post 🙂 Here are some pieces of advice that you may find use of when creating professional/ business email address:
1. No nicknames and numbers.
Of course, something like coolmacho@domain.com or sexygirl@domain.com could be really cool and unique and there might be a specific purpose for using it. But what if your business partner sees this email address? He/she could think twice before replying to such sender. It is better to use only the name or first name plus last name for business needs. For example, john@domain.com or john.johnson@domain.com will make much better impression. The other advantage of using these kinds of names is it’s easy to remember.
2. Use your own domain name.
A lot of people create their accounts using free email providers services which is a good choice as well. If you have your own domain name, do not hesitate to create an email box at it. John@johncompany.com sounds quite good in a business world and has more perspectives when mailing your potential business partner. Plus, you can create an email box with your name and be sure it is not occupied by another user.
3. Set your email display name.
Once the email address is created setting your name and surname is good step to continue. In this case receiver of your email message will see an email message from John Johnson instead of Name Surname or Not Specified. Our spamsters think this brings a professional look to the Inbox and also helps to remember the sender and distinguish him/her from others.
4. Avoid special characters and numbers
Using special characters is not recommended, with an exception to dashes (-), periods (.) and underscores (_). As we said previously john.johnson@domain.com is fine, but not a john$$$@domain.com or johnny1975@domain.com. There is no need to show your birth date with the email address either or show your imagination with something like john12345@domain.com.
Now you are all set to create a unique and making-good-impression email address. If you have already an email address that everybody knows but you wish it had a different name, don’t be upset, there is always a possibility to create an alias or set the forwarding to your current email address
Follow our blog and we will tell you more on how to work with email addresses more efficiently and have them spam-free.
Hopefully, you enjoyed the article and if you have any questions or doubts, feel free to comment.
Cheers!

Tip for Filtering Settings
We hope that you are one of the happy users whose Inbox is clean and tidy while your blocked list is full of spam messages. But what if it’s not? What if the blocked list is empty and your Inbox is full of garbage?
In this article we would like to share with you some tips on how to get over this issue quickly. Once there is a doubt regarding correct filtering, you can always check it at your settings page:
https://spamdrain.com/en/app.html#/settings
In the top right corner you can see your email addresses added to the filtering. If there is a yellow triangle (like shown on a screenshot) left to the email address, this is a sign to check.
This means the filtering is not working as it should be due to some error. You can see the error message while clicking on the triangle. Even you spot one of such errors, there is no need to worry, those errors are easy to fix in a few clicks. If there something like “Authentication Error” or “Login Failed”, you need to verify if Spamster is using up-to-date password in order to filter messages. Here is more info:
https://spamdrain.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002612785-Password-Update-Change
If the error contains something strange that means nothing to you, don’t panic, it’s even easier to fix! Just contact our support and we will be glad to fix the issue or provide you with the guide no how to do it from your side.
We encourage our customers to double check if they have any doubts about filtering of their Inboxes. Please do not hesitate to contact our support if our help desk articles do not bring the needed solution.
Share with your friends and let the yellow triangle never appear at your Spamdrain settings  😉
Going on Vacation – Take Your Spamster in Your Pocket
The season of vacations is at its peak . Hopefully, you are among those who are enjoying one or planning your destination. Of course, some of you cannot just leave all work behind and have to keep track of your inbox. So do not forget to take your Spamster with you and let him be on guard 24 hours a day. All we want to say – Spamdrain mobile apps will be a good help here.
Most of our users have already felt the benefits of using Spamdrain mobile application along with the web version.
However we keep receiving queries on how to continue using Spamdrain if a user has no access to a computer. Here come our mobile applications to make use of.
Our iOS and Android Apps are additions to the basic web version view. You can manage the filtering of your email address using different devices, whatever suits you best. Once the filtering is paused using Android mobile application, it will be paused on your iOS application and web version as well. The same thing is about the messages. You can see the same messages no matter which device you use. Such options like sharing, account and subscription editing are also available within the applications.
We would also like to shed light on how Spamdrain filtering works. Once the email address is added to the filtering, it will be filtered for as long as you wish. Our service is cloud based, so no matter whether you have access to the web or not, your email remains safe. You can easily drink cocktail on the beach leaving your fears about spam behind.
Even if you do not have access to the Internet or there is no Wi-Fi at the beach, that’s ok, our Spamsters will not stop cleaning your Inboxes.
Don’t forget to take a hat, the sun is really shiny here today!
Have a nice vacation and Inbox free from spam 😉

In other words, each user account is “separated” from others. The owner of subscription is able to create/remove users and move email addresses between users. Payments in this subscription are handled by the owner, there is no need for the users to worry about expiration date. The best way to help your employees save their time 😉
Spam Statistics 2016
Recently we have posted an article dedicated to 2016 achievements of Spamdrain team.
However we would like to pay special attention to our Spamsters hard work during last year.
In this post we are sharing some surprising facts about our Spamsters daily work.
It turned out that our Spamsters filtered 477.65 M messages during last year and only 148.74 M (31%) of them were classified as valid messages.
Doing simple mathematics we found out that 328.91 M messages were classified as spam which is 69% of the total number. As you can see, the load of spam messages is twice bigger than of valid ones. We can surely say, that spammers are trying to “improve” these stats every year 🙂
Using those number we tried to calculate how much time is spent on spam checking every day. If you are super fast person who checks one spam message in one second, you will spend 10,5 years in order to check 328.91 M spam messages. But what if you spend 5 seconds to check one spam message, or even 10? Billions of wasted seconds and hours… If you are using your email address added to the filtering for business, you can calculate the price of such time depending on hourly cost. Billions of lost money…
Our average customer receives approximately 40 spam messages a day which are being filtered by our hard working spamsters. What if you do not have your own spamster and spend, let’s say 5 seconds to read/check/remove the spam message? That will cost you up to 20 hours per year to check those spam messages. Realizing that, our spamster are working even harder, because they want you to spend that time with your family, friends, even with your cat or dog.
We hope you enjoyed the article and now you are more happy to have your spamster than before.
Please feel free to share this post and help other people to save their precious time.

2016 Highlights
When the Festive season is over and 2017 is ready to start working on all the New Year Resolutions and plans, we would like to stop for a moment to sum up what Spamdrain has achieved in 2016.
As most of the companies, we had our business plan for the year and had already summarised it for ourselves. However, all the plans and their realisations would not have been possible without YOU, our customers, so now we are more than glad to share our main achievements with YOU:
- In 2016 we have processed more than 3500 customers’ support requests which means that Spamdrain Team has solved lots of issues in different areas and we are happy to know that our Team is strong enough to deal with any matter that may appear. We have also updated our Help Desk Articles and created new ones based on your requests.
- We have expanded our team in order to provide excellent service. Each Spamdrain’s team member knows that his or her work is one more step to better quality of the product.
- In 2016 we have received much more positive feedbacks than in any other previous year. Reading them, we understand that we are on the right way to happy customer. You might want to check some recent feedbacks on our main page of the website (feedbacks are updating).
- 2016 has brought some negative feedbacks as well but we are thankful for that as well. Having carefully studied each of them helped us to understand that there are no limits in getting better and we will continue working on our perfection.
- Based on the feedbacks and reviews from our customers, we have provided different discounts for new and current users. The most recent discount was dedicated to Black Friday. We hope that you enjoyed them and surely, we will enrol some new discounts soon.
- We have rolled out a lot of new features. Actually, our users suggested many of them and we really appreciate this contribution to Spamdrain. You can check newly added features in our previous posts here.
- We have trained all our Spamsters to work as a team and always stay on guard of our customers’ Inboxes.
All in all, we would like to thank YOU for helping us in reaching our last year goals and we hope that this year will bring us new ideas and new achievements. There are lots of things we have planned and a lot of work to be done.
All we want is a world of clean Inboxes 🙂
